The first 2 weeks of your first AI project usually get most of the attention.

That makes sense. It is the part where you are proving something. You are trying to find out whether the workflow works at all, whether the concept is real, and whether the business should keep going.

That stage matters a lot, but you can’t stop there. If this goes well, the next stage is where the tone starts to change.

Now the business is no longer asking, “Can AI do this in theory?” Now it is asking things like:

• How does this run inside our company?
• Which model are we actually going to use?
• What does it cost to run every month?
• What live systems need to connect?
• Which outputs matter most?
• What edge cases start to matter now that this is no longer a demo?

That is the “6”.

If the first 2 weeks are about proving the workflow, this next part is about finding out whether the business can actually live with it.

It is less exciting on the surface, but it is more practical. It is also where a lot of projects either become real or quietly stall out.

In the first phase, a team can get away with controlled conditions. They can use sample files, mocked inputs, stronger models than they might use long term, and a lot of hands-on attention. In the next phase, that starts to change.

This is where the workflow has to move a little closer to reality. It does not need to become a giant enterprise rollout yet, but it does need to start proving that it can survive inside the actual business.

The team has to decide what systems really matter. They have to figure out what data has to be live and what can still be simulated. They have to identify which outputs people actually need, not just what looked good in a demo. They have to start handling the edge cases that only show up once the process gets closer to real use.

Hidden Traps

This is also the point where teams can make a mess of things in a couple of different ways.

Mistake #1: Overbuilding

Once the concept is proven, there is a temptation to start solving everything at once. More integrations. More workflows. More architecture. More future-proofing. More production hardening than the moment actually requires.

That usually feels responsible and forward-thinking, but it often creates a different problem. The team starts building for a future that has not been earned yet.

Mistake #2: Under-integrating

The workflow technically works, but it is still floating outside the business. It depends on fake inputs, hidden manual effort, or a narrow set of perfect conditions. It has no clear owner. The outputs are vague. The trust level is low. It never really crosses the line from “interesting” to “useful.”

The six-week phase is really about staying out of both traps. It is about integrating enough to make the workflow real, but not so much that the team disappears into a science project.

At the end of the six, I would expect clearer answers to questions like:

  • What systems actually matter here?

  • What is the expected ongoing cost?

  • What still needs a human in the loop?

  • Which edge cases are real, and which ones are just noise?

  • What outputs or reports will make this useful to the business?

  • Is this still one workflow, or are we starting to wander into five?

After this, we test live…

By the end of this phase, the business does not need perfection, but it should have a workflow that is closer to real operation, a better view of ongoing cost, a clearer sense of ownership, a sharper understanding of the edge cases, and a more grounded recommendation on what should happen next.

The hard part is usually not proving that AI can do something interesting. The hard part is helping the business decide what it is willing to live with, support, trust, and expand. Everything in technology has always been about trade-offs, and AI is no different.

That is why the six matters.

The first 2 weeks prove the workflow. The next six prove the business can carry it.
